1st prize ‘Replacement construction of Spickelbad Augsburg’
January 2026
Our design envisages a new building that serves as a shared space for sports, school and the public, bringing together a wide range of users in a ‘swimming pool for everyone’. The building radiates openness and clarity, creating a lively atmosphere of communication. Visual connections between the hall, outdoor pool and outdoor space promote orientation and make the building a modern meeting place for schoolchildren, clubs and the public. The design reflects a respectful attitude towards the outdoor pool area and emphasises ecological, economic and social sustainability. The compact hybrid timber construction and clear structure contribute significantly to this. All functions of the new building are integrated into a single-storey structure. The different requirements for clear room heights are efficiently implemented via a staggered roof landscape. A surrounding ‘cladding’ of vertical wooden slats of varying densities connects the parts of the building to create a harmonious, understated and yet striking appearance. The interplay of transparency and solidity responds to the respective use and creates a lively façade.
The design was developed in collaboration with the engineering firm Möller + Meyer Gotha GmbH, Uniola AG and wh-p Ingenieure. Many thanks to everyone involved and to our competition team for their work!
