Energy Made Tangible

The concept of interconnectivity is inherent to Stadtwerke Stuttgart Group as a municipal electricity and gas provider. However, their mission also encompasses making a significant contribution to the energy transition and carbon neutrality. Both aspects are embodied in the new EnergieCampus in Stuttgart-Wangen, where Stadtwerke Stuttgart, Stuttgart Netze, and the energy services of the state capital Stuttgart are united at one single location for the first time. The greatest contribution to sustainability has been achieved through adaptive reuse of the existing building stock.

Barely noticeable from outside, we have transformed the existing building’s interior spaces into an engaging headquarters for visitors and employees alike, vividly demonstrating what is possible in terms of sustainability, digitalization, and energy transition. Beyond a contemporary workplace spanning six floors, a canteen, a mobility hub with extensive photovoltaic installations on the roof and facade, as well as storage and workshop areas, the facility also features a new, innovative customer centre.
The approach: to create an immersive energy transition experience that motivates climate protection activities.

The customer centre offers visitors an interactive exhibition with compelling real-time insights into energy flows, along with comprehensive information on energy generation and utilization. The sustainability theme has been implemented not only on a conceptual level but also in terms of the used materials: bright, adaptable interior spaces, easy-to-dismantle structures and the use of unfinished wood create added value for people and the environment.

The five upper floors house office spaces, while the sixth floor accommodates conference rooms. The scheme aligns with the corporate identity of Stadtwerke: yellow, green, and blue characterize furniture, built-in elements, wall colours, and floor coverings. The office areas have been designed for maximum versatility to adapt spaces to changing requirements at any time. Wooden elements made of maritime pine and lightweight wood wool panels add texture to the interior spaces and indicate circulation routes and communication areas. Glass elements and internal portholes enable cross-connections and sightlines between the individual spaces.
