Architecture of light

Outside the city centre of Weisswasser, where the open-air stadium was once located, the “Oberlausitzer Sport- und Freizeitpark” is taking shape. One part of it is the new ice arena, for which we were commissioned. Landmark amidst the park landscape: Surrounded by dense forest, the property forms an island within the vegetation.

The building’s formal language and materials have been reduced to the essentials, creating a structure that is defined by the interplay of light and shadow. The surrounding U-glass facade creates a bright interior space whilst the translucent facade corresponds with the ice surface, white seats, and exposed concrete surfaces. At night, the building glows from the inside, revealing vague contours of the inner visitors and objects to the outside in a silhouette-like manner.

The orthogonal hall structure, with dimensions of approximately 82 m x 62 m, offers a seating capacity of up to 3,000 people. Designed as a multifunctional hall, it provides space not only for sports events but also for concerts, exhibitions, conferences, as well as private, corporate, and club celebrations.
