
One of Europe’s Most Modern Arenas
Sports facilities serve as landmarks of our cities. They create identity and function as important experiential venues for fans and spectators. From a sustainability perspective, however, they often embody what architecture should have long since moved away from: monofunctional, large-scale new buildings on greenfield sites. The MHP Arena demonstrates that there are other ways. For UEFA EURO 2024, asp Architekten have now modernized it for the sixth time. The home stadium of VfB Stuttgart thus exemplifies the development of existing structures as the highest principle of sustainable construction in the field of sports facilities. It also proves that one of Germany’s longest-serving arenas can also be one of its most modern. The Federal Ministry of the Environment highlighted this modernization as a “Good Practice Example” for circular construction.

What’s New – An Overview
The design team implemented perhaps the largest measure directly at the heart of the stadium – during ongoing operations. The main grandstand, parts of which were 50 years old, has been renovated and enlarged up to the membrane roof supports. This increased the number of business seats from 1,628 to 2,545. The lounge areas grew from 2,150 to 3,710 square meters, and the bar and food service areas nearly doubled from 336 to 632 square meters. With the capacity of the MHP Arena, VfB Stuttgart now possesses the third-largest stadium in the First Bundesliga – after Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park and FC Bayern München’s Allianz Arena.
In accordance with UEFA requirements for EURO 2024, the player and press areas were also redesigned and more than doubled in size. The new facilities include team changing rooms, functional rooms, a media center, a VIP area, and a central kitchen. Perhaps the greatest highlight among the new features: the design team created Germany’s first Tunnel Club as an exclusive business area. From here, visitors gain unique insights behind the scenes.
Through these extensive measures, the MHP Arena meets all UEFA requirements.



Highest Standards of Functionality and Exclusivity – The Experience
In addition to the player and press areas, the design naturally focused on elevating the experience for visitors to a new level. The exclusive range of experiences has expanded significantly: Another 917 business seats were created during the renovation work. The range of services is rounded off by the new commercial kitchen, where regional ingredients are used to prepare fresh meals on site.
The new main grandstand also serves as a conference and event center, making the MHP Arena a special venue beyond football or other sporting events. The center, with its piano bar and lounge, offers a completely new level of comfort—ideal for conferences, meetings, or trade fairs. The team designed the facilities, with individual areas between 200 and 750 square meters, to accommodate up to eight conferences simultaneously.



In the Spirit of Sustainability – Implementation and Operation
The entire renovation project is focused on sustainability. The greatest contribution is probably made by the consistent reuse of existing buildings and infrastructure and by preserving as much of the gray energy already built in as possible. The aim was to keep as many materials as possible in circulation and to reuse them throughout this modernization. In the case of the main stand, the team successfully reused nearly 100 percent of the demolished concrete within the stadium. In collaboration with structural engineers schlaich bergermann partner, the planning and tendering for the shell construction was already geared towards CO2-reduced recycled concrete.

Through collaboration with the regional demolition company Feess and the concrete supplier SCHWENK Beton, the executing company Ed. Züblin AG was able to ecologically reintegrate the concrete from the demolished stand back into the stadium. This meant that the demolition waste could be recycled into resource-saving concrete just a few kilometers away from the stadium at Stuttgart Harbour. This approach is particularly relevant for a construction project with such high demands on concrete quality, as this type is not standardized and requires individual approval for use. The concrete is type CEM III, whose CO2 savings result from the use of clinker-reduced cement as an aggregate. Other components and materials that could no longer be reused on site were catalogued by the start-up Concular, resold via its platform, and thus kept in circulation.

The sustainable aspect of the MHP Arena does not end with the construction measures. The architects designed systems to close cycles in future operations as well. For example, waste heat from cooling systems was utilized. In addition, the floodlights were converted to LED technology and a large kitchen was installed, where meals are prepared using regional products.
Part of the sustainability concept also includes the architects’ design of the new main stand as a conference and event center, which allows the extensive infrastructure to be utilized far beyond pure football and sports events. This greatly increases the level of stadium occupancy and transforms it into a multifunctional experience venue.



What makes the MHP Arena unique is not only that it now features Germany’s first Tunnel Club. Its distinguishing features also include being the only arena in Europe into which architects have subsequently integrated a multi-purpose hall. The SCHARRena is located in the Untertürkheim curve under the stands and was also designed by asp Architekten in 2011. The team designed it for international, national, regional, and local sporting events, providing capacity for up to 2,250 spectators. A cantilevered structure and fully glazed access grant it a unique architectural character.
The textile membrane roof of the MHP Arena was also the first of its kind in Europe. The design team also pioneered technical innovations: they installed what was then Germany’s first full-matrix video display board in color technology.
