Red symbolises exercise and activity

The new sports hall in Postbauer-Heng is situated close to the town centre and the town hall. Thanks to its exposed location, the hall is visible from afar – an architectural landmark serving as a point of orientation. Reflecting the urban context, the hall is a clear, distinctive, compact structure facing in all directions.

Floating roof slab

The basic conceptual idea is the cantilevered “roof slab”, which appears to “float” above the landscape thanks to the glazed exterior facade on all sides. Greenery and existing trees are reflected in the glass surfaces, rendering the building envelope almost immaterial. The “floating roof slab” is the new architectural landmark of the town. By lowering the playing field and changing areas the building volume of the sports hall has been reduced to match the dimensions, so that it blends well into the small-scale urban fabric.

Space – texture – colour

The clear architectural structure echoes in the straightforward space planning with the spectator deck on level 1 and the sports facilities on level 0, as well as in the chosen materials regarding the interior effect of their texture and colour. We deliberately chose an intense red colour for the arena with its sports floor, baffle walls and retractable stands, as well as for all the floors and walls of the “Functional Bracket” on Level 1, which covers and ties all parts together like a “throw-over”. For us, red stands for vigour, exercise, activity and sports. The result is an abstraction that emphasises the plasticity of the main body which, under the floating roof slab, enters into an exciting dialogue with the surrounding landscape.
