Reclaiming the city’s history
LGS ULM 2030 – Transformation from a monofunctional engineering structure to an urban living space as the key to the concept. With the 2030 State Garden Show in Ulm, the buildings of the Federal Fortress are to become more visible and reintegrated into the cityscape, the dominance of traffic along the Federal Highway B10 is to be reduced and the resulting open spaces are to be used for cyclists and pedestrians as well as for more urban greenery. Today, the B10 in Ulm still represents the legacy of the “car-friendly city” of the 1960s and 1970s and reflects this concept almost unchanged.
Sequences
The overall concept involves restoring the visibility of the linear glacis structure of the Federal Fortress and integrating it into a lively open space structure. A major objective of the State Garden Show is to re-establish the cross-connections in the east-west direction. The B10 road is intended to be transformed from a monofunctional engineering structure into an urban living space. This requires the transformation of traffic infrastructure for cars and the creation of continuous, attractive foot and cycle paths.
Transformation process
Based on the open space fragments of the former fortification, the overall concept is put together like the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle and linked to create an integral space that is legible and tangible. By reducing and transforming the motor vehicle traffic infrastructure and establishing continuous, attractive pedestrian and cycle connections, we are creating an overarching, (open space) infrastructure and space for alternative urban developments. Interventions in the existing transportation system will take place at three main junctions: Blaubeurer Tor, Mittelbastion and Ehinger Tor.
2030 State Garden Show as a process
The State Garden Show begins for the citizens of Ulm even before it opens in 2030. In this context, the transformation of the road infrastructure is key. It must be intensively discussed and negotiated with the citizens. This will require different formats (participation, experiments, preview interventions, construction site/showroom, etc.). Overarching themes are caught between old historical fragments (fortress) and a new understanding of integrative planning that combines the seemingly contradictory requirements of traffic and accessibility, housing and commerce, open space qualities and climate protection with supply and socio-spatial qualities.
