About us

We see our firm as a community. A community composed of many different talents and disciplines – from architects and interior designers to urban developers and spatial planners, process designers, communication designers and journalists.

Our team is diverse and international. Openness and tolerance characterise the way we work together. We share the desire to create spaces that will endure today and tomorrow, enrich our lives and are in harmony with our environment.

Regular talks, professional development courses and group excursions are a compelling force. We regard the exchange with colleagues from other specialist disciplines as a matter of course. This gives us the opportunity to share knowledge and discuss current issues and requirements.

What we do

In our projects, we develop conceptual strategies and pursue them down to the smallest detail. We respond to the profound changes in construction with cross-scale planning and process-oriented working methods. Our range of services covers all phases of the HOAI (German Fee Structure for Architects and Engineers) as well as in-depth feasibility studies. At the urban planning level, we handle both informal and formal planning phases. We have developed various formats as Phase 0 for defining objectives and clarifying tasks.

Climate-neutral architecture firm

Every day, we work on the design of sustainable buildings and districts that minimise CO2 emissions not only during operation, but also during their construction phase, and which can be returned to the cycle at the end of their liefspan to meet the concept of circular construction.

But we as a practice also want to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. With almost 100 employees at two locations, this is not an easy endeavour. Nonetheless, as an organisation we must and want to rethink our everyday practice, scrutinise previous processes and change in many respects.

A few months ago, we therefore drew up our own carbon footprint for the first time and determined how much CO2 we consume in which areas. Emissions that we could not avoid have been compensated for. We understand this should be the last tool and that the adjustments we need to make are others.

Since 2021, we are authorised to call ourselves the first climate-neutral architecture firm in Baden-Württemberg. Yet we realise that climate neutrality is not the goal, but only one leg of the journey. Just like thinking in cycles, sustainability is a loop that never ends, but must keep on running.

Sustainability has a lot to do with credibility and the need to look closely to avoid greenwashing. We therefore want to make transparent how the process advances within our organisation. We will disclose here which measures we are taking, and which hurdles we are currently unable to overcome. You can view our carbon footprint here.

How we have evolved

The history of asp Architekten dates back to the 1950s with its predecessor practice Siegel-Wonneberg Partner and the planning group of Mete Arat (Arat-Haisch-Volz). Today’s practice is the direct successor to ‘asp’ (Arat, Siegel + Partner), which was founded in 1992 by Mete Arat and Henner Siegel. 2006 übernahmen Cem Arat, Karsten Schust und Jochen Siegel die Führung des Büros.

In 2015, after many years of collaboration, Markus Weismann with his practice UMnet urban matters joined asp Architekten, adding urban development to the focus of our work. Due to our wide range of activities, over the years we have grown into a firm with five managing partners: Cem Arat, Markus Weismann, Suna Konyalioglu, Eberhard Becker and Dimitrios Kogios. The individual partners’ different specialisations and strengths form the basis for the cross-scale portfolio of our practice.

The strategic level is complemented by 16 associates who are involved in various areas of expertise, such as sustainability, climate adaptation, artificial intelligence and knowledge transfer. The multi-layered office structure enables us to react quickly and agilely to future issues.
