Construction site update: Grüner Betriebshof
September 2025
We are making great strides towards the topping-out ceremony in December at the construction site of the Green Depot in Mannheim’s Feudenheim district. Construction of the timber structure began a few weeks ago, and the buildings of the new depot are taking shape.
The centrepiece is the four-storey main building, constructed using a hybrid timber design and featuring a striking wooden façade. It will house a modern working environment and spacious common rooms for employees. In addition, three workshops will be built on the 30,000 square metre site, which will house a carpentry workshop, a painting workshop and a metalworking shop. The workshops will also be constructed primarily from wood: wooden trusses and wooden façades have been attached to the reinforced concrete columns. A total of around 1,700 cubic metres of wood will be used in the construction.
The U-shaped car park, which surrounds the site and all technical functions, is already visible today and will form a barely noticeable transition to the adjacent ‘BUGA Park residential quarter’, which is also currently under construction.
The concept, developed in collaboration with Koeber Landschaftsarchitektur, envisages creating accessible lawn areas by greening the garage roofs, allowing the depot to blend in with its surroundings. This allows the main building with its striking wooden façade to stand out on its own, creating an attractive address for the new depot. The client is GBG Sonderimmobilien GmbH, with Züblin Timber responsible for the structural and timber construction.
