
Large stadium and inclusive sports park
Located on the border of the districts of Pankow, Wedding, and Mitte, and in the immediate vicinity of Mauerpark, lies the historic Friedrich-Ludwig-Jahn-Sportpark. For many Berliners, it is a place with strong symbolic significance for inclusive sports, school sports, club sports, and individual sports, as well as for leisure and recreation. A design competition was launched to adapt the sports park—which opened in the early 1950s—to current requirements and future uses. The design calls for preserving defining elements such as the red facade of the existing building, light poles, and stadium seats as identity-defining features and integrating them into the sports park’s new concept. The new wooden roof structure and the green terraces at the stadium complement the modernized existing building, which has been expanded to include access routes, terraces, athlete facilities, and functional spaces.

This design proposal aims to preserve elements that define the site—such as the red facade of the existing building, light poles, and stadium seats—as identity-defining features and integrate them into the new concept for the sports park. The “new green”—in the form of a vibrant network, a sustainable timber roof structure, and green terraces on the stadium building—embraces and integrates the modernized existing structure. The existing reinforced concrete skeleton of the existing building forms the core of the new grandstand structure. A series of circulation routes, terraces, sports facilities, and function rooms surrounds and complements the existing building.

Sustainability
To protect the climate, the potential of green areas and roofs and the use of rainwater are taken into account In line with the concept of a sponge city, sealed areas are minimized, and roof water and greywater are directed into filter trenches for the irrigation of green areas. CO2-Neutrality
The objective is to create a climate-positive sports park. For this reason, the existing building will continue to be used and integrated into the new building. The carbon footprint is considered over the entire lifecycle of the building, including all energies during operation. By compensating for construction emissions, the entire lifecycle of the sports park becomes carbon neutral. Energy concept
The centrepiece of the proposed energy concept is the energy centre. This is where all energy flows. The electricity generated from renewable sources on the large roof surface is distributed, stored in batteries, or used for seasonal storage to produce hydrogen. Hydrogen is produced from renewable sources using local photovoltaic systems and an electrolyzer and stored on site. Hydrogen is used for both heat and electricity generation. The goal is to take a broader view of energy supply and integrate it with neighboring neighborhoods beyond the property boundaries.


Circular and resource-efficient construction
All materials and objects of the existing structure are considered from the perspective of circular construction. Re-use: The stadium seats will be repurposed and distributed as benches throughout the sports park. The iconic light poles on the Mauerpark side will be preserved, structurally reinforced, and used as accessible viewing platforms as well as for energy generation via wind turbines. Re-duce: All structures will be designed as timber-frame buildings. The use of reinforced concrete is largely avoided. Necessary concrete surfaces are made from recycled concrete. Re-cycle: The material for this comes from the existing grandstand. It is to be reused in the construction of the new grandstand building on the facade and on the wall surfaces and cladding of the existing structure.
