Multifunctional

congress centre

MUCcc

The international convention centre due to be built in Freising is set to become a new landmark in European event architecture. The design by asp Architekten was awarded second prize in the multi-stage competition.

A hybrid multifunctional hall based on the “low tech” principle: The design for the multifunctional MUCcc congress center not far from Munich Airport is characterized by its climate-friendly and future-oriented construction. The key design idea is to combine all functions (event hall, hotel, and multi-storey car park) in a single structure and the interaction with its context.

Consequently, the new building is situated on a large, green landscape tableau and confidently defines the western gateway to the airport. As a solitary structure visible from afar, it enters into a dialogue with its surroundings through its gleaming shell as evening falls: A membrane comprising a semi-transparent, horizontally curved PTFE roof and facade skin reveals the internal structure of the building to the outside. From the outside, the use of the building thus becomes vaguely perceptible, whilst allowing a clear view from the inside.

The arena features an innovative supporting structure that is primarily made of timber. The conventional building materials steel and concrete are reduced to a minimum. Accordingly, the roof girders, floor slabs and the spectator stands have been designed with prefabricated timber segments.

Designed as a multifunctional building, the circular bowl with a capacity of up to 22,000 spectators incorporates versatile functional options and can host sporting events as well as public screenings, congresses, and conferences. The hotel is integrated into the structure of the Bowl and as a backstage hotel the distances are short. The building with its iconic appearance advances to become a landmark and a centre of attraction in the middle of a vast and remote environment.
