Gazi Stadion Waldau

First Prize in the Design and Build Competition 2013; Client: City of Stuttgart; in collaboration and on behalf of Ed. Züblin AG; Completion in 2015

The stadium’s idyllic location in the Waldau sports and recreation area sets the scene for the overall concept. The concept provides for the redefinition of the stadium’s interior and the increased integration of the stadium into the surrounding scheme. The new main grandstand with 2,200 seats encompasses the entire southern side of the pitch, and thus defines the stadium with a uniform, cohesive character.

Horizontal and functional layering
The basic idea for the building is the horizontal, functional layering on three levels: a ground floor utility and service level, an elevated entrance promenade on level 1, and an attractive lounge floor (level 2) with a panoramic view of the pitch and the landscape. The distinctive form of the building, which unfolds to the southeast with a wide cantilevered structure, gives it its unmistakable identity. The objectives of the design: bringing spectators as close as possible to the action and optimising their view of the pitch. Furthermore, the redesign of the main grandstand ensures compliance with the licensing requirements of the German Football Association.
