New leisure pool with indoor ice rink

An experience for pool guests and ice sports enthusiasts: asp Architekten rebuild the Rheinhöhe sports park in Wiesbaden and set it into relation to its green surroundings. The building envelope appears almost immaterial when the trees and surroundings are reflected in the transparent glass surfaces.
A modern and attractive new leisure pool complex will replace the run-down recreational pool in Mainzer Strasse at the Rheinhöhe sports park. A large family sauna including an outdoor area is to be added to the existing facilities at the Mainzer Straße leisure pool. As a replacement for the artificial ice rink, which is also in need of renovation, an indoor ice rink will be built at the same location. The new building will also incorporate offices for the mattiaqua swimming pool company and the thermal building yard.

The master plan of the overall urban development concept pursues a linear, terraced spatial structure between Konrad-Adenauer-Ring and the neighbouring landscape with the residential development in Erlenweg. This creates a new urban edge towards the large school, sports and administrative buildings along Konrad-Adenauer-Ring whilst forming a gentle transition to the low, small-scale residential development on Erlenweg.

The unique scenery of the surroundings and the incorporation of the open spaces set the design principles for the new landmark sports park. The result is a three-storey building whose floor slabs and intensively greened roof surfaces formally evolve from the contours of the landscape and create the image of a leafy roof. Embedding the building in the landscape favourably reduces its volume. It seems as if architecture and topography are merging in the urban transition. This creates lively and distinctive areas both indoors and outdoors.

In dialog with visitors and the environment
The architectural concept revolves around the building entering into a dialogue with visitors and its surroundings by means of its glazed facade. The surroundings and the existing trees are reflected in the transparent glass surfaces, making the building envelope appear almost immaterial. Under the wide cantilevered roof landscape, the view extends into the interior of the sports park. Passers-by can catch a glimpse of the hustle and bustle inside from the entrance square.

The image of the leafy canopy is playfully abstracted in the interior: The diamond-shaped elements of the wooden ceiling construction are coloured in various shades of green and reflect the light against the blue of the pool. Doors and passageways also refer to the green outdoor space. The association creates a pleasant, warm feel and an exciting experience of the interior that offers bathers and ice sports enthusiasts a high amenity value.
