Concept and handling of the existing building structures
The core of the concept for the new W+W Quarter is the almost complete preservation of the existing structures. The two landmark high-rise buildings, visible from afar, mark the entrance to Ludwigsburg. Together with the adjacent administrative buildings, they form an ensemble that gives the area its identity. This ensemble already boasts many spatial qualities, which must be preserved in line with the resource-efficient approach for the future neighbourhood.
The objective of the design is therefore to create an urban, mixed-use, productive and ecological neighbourhood with minimal, targeted structural alterations to the existing buildings.

Integration into the urban fabric
The new W+W Quarter is a link between Südstadt, the W+W Campus and, thanks to new bridges, also to Weststadt on the other side of the tracks and an important building block within the green belt. This context gives rise to open spaces with different qualities within the neighbourhood: the urban square at the intersection with the W+W Campus, the activity-oriented park on top of the car park and the green inner courtyard that connects to the southern part of the city.
Connections within the neighborhood
The existing structure has been supplemented with new open spaces on several levels to create conncetions and a mix of uses, as well as new qualities of open space within the neighbourhood. Surrounding the inner courtyard, a series of new, interconnected platforms have been created between the buildings, which are used for a range of different purposes, providing communal areas both indoors and outdoors. The directly adjacent activity park creates a particularly wide range of communal areas, especially on the first storey.

Unsealing and greening
Maximum greening and unsealing of existing areas, roofs and facades are planned to improve the urban climate characteristics of the neighbourhood. The natural sun shading and rainwater buffer thus created, in combination with the evaporation from new trees and the use of basement floors for water storage, ensures a pleasant local urban climate and will have a significant impact on the future appearance of the area.
Park-Haus
The newly constructed Park-Haus forms the new backbone of the quarter. In addition to the large, activity-oriented parkland on the roof, the ground floor comprises the delivery area for the commercial premises, as well as the supermarket and restaurants. The majority of the parking spaces for the quarter are located in the basement levels with direct access to the inner courtyard. At the same time, the building serves to protect the inner courtyard from noise coming from the tracks.
