Both and

House S owes its high quality of life to the juxtaposition of its contradictions. The terraced corner house from the 1930s was extended to double the living space. Some of the existing rooms face north or are on the mezzanine floor and therefore suffered from poor lighting conditions.
Its great advantage, however: An old garden with a great view over the city and river, a quality that offers many opportunities. Yet, the challenging building regulations only allowed for a very limited scope.
In a kind of mathematical design process, new rooms were added and linked to the existing building in accordance with building regulations and the requirement for the best possible lighting. This resulted in a sculptural building with an open plan interior.
